11th Global Communication Summit
The Future of Europe, Technology and Sports from a Communication Perspective

The Emerson-Blanquerna Center for Global Communication is pleased to announce the 11th Global Communication Summit, to be held at the Blanquerna School of Communication and International Relations, Ramon Llull University, in Barcelona, from October 10, 2025.
The Summit will feature keynote speakers, presentations, and panel discussions addressing the impact of new technologies on communication, alongside the social, political, and economic uncertainties associated with these transformations.
The 11th Global Communication Summit focuses in three thematic areas and its intersections. First, the Summit focuses on transatlantic relations in a changing geopolitical landscape. The inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025 has begun a new chapter in the evolving relationship between the US and Europe. Europeans are thus being forced to reinvent themselves and the international system they operate in, as the traditional scheme established in the aftermath of World War II under the American leadership is crumbling. International liberal institutions such as the European Union and the United Nations system are contending with increased skepticism from within. Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine has sparked numerous debates about European strategic autonomy and its capacity to ensure citizen welfare and security when its traditional allies’ engagement is highly contested.
Second, we encourage proposals focused on technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and the communication ecosystem. Technology is a transformative force for our societies and our means of communication and relations. The complete consolidation of the Internet and social media, which have overwhelmed traditional media, has come with both challenges and opportunities. In this regard, we have delved into an era of sociopolitical polarization as populist and radical narratives are easily spread in the digital arena. The rise of generative AI, capable of executing complex tasks with more efficiency, has affected all facets of human life, and will continue to do so.
Finally, the 2025 Global Communication Summit welcomes contributions that focus on sports as a tool to promote well-being, human relations, and communication. Sports are not only fundamental for personal and physical well-being, but also a cohesive social nexus. As such, sports can be viewed as a universal language that allows individuals and nations to transcend differences and borders to connect communities, cultures and societies. The Summit understands sports as a crucial yet ignored element of communication studies, including journalism, corporate communications, the audiovisual industry, marketing, public relations, as well as an area that intersects with education, psychology and health.
Beyond the previous three thematic areas, the 11th Blanquerna-Emerson Global Communication Summit welcomes contributions on other themes, once they fall within the realms of communication and international relations in a broader sense to promote scholarly debates and provide a rich environment to discuss current challenges. The Summit is open to scholars, students, independent researchers, communication practitioners, governmental officials, NGO members and business leaders.
Submission guidelines
A 250-word abstract and registration is due by September 12, 2025. The abstract should include the purpose, methodology, findings, implications, and originality of the study. Those interested in submitting an abstract should complete all appropriate sections of the following online form: https://forms.gle/H9XmLVVwspdL5Erv8. Those interested in only attending the summit should also complete the online form and fill out all appropriate sections. Email acceptance notifications will be sent to the first author of the submission.
The academic part of the Summit will take place only in-person on October 10, 2025 at the Blanquerna School of Communication and International Relations (Barcelona). The Summit is partnered with the international journals Tripodos and American Behavioral Scientist.
